What Key West High School Offers

Many clubs have been started in the past few years, and the 2025 incoming freshman orientation is coming up in a few days. Here’s what Key West High School (KWHS) offers. From academics to athletics and even extracurricular activities, there’s always something for someone.

In academics, numerous advanced placement (AP) and honors classes will boost your grade point average (GPA) and look better for college applications. The most complex AP classes will be your usual challenging AP classes, AP United States History, AP Physics, etc. Although, the teachers for all AP classes will prepare you the best they can for the class’s exam. If you’re not looking towards college or know precisely what you want to do, KWHS has career pathway classes that will teach you the knowledge you need to know. For example, in the auto mechanics class, you can get certified and work hands-on with certain car parts.  There are also three engineering classes: Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, and Aeronautical Engineering. On the more creative side, KWHS offers Digital Video Technology with levels ranging from 1-4. In these classes, students will learn how to edit photos and videos in Adobe Photoshop, Premier, and AfterEffects. As you learn more, other opportunities, such as state and local competitions, will be available.

As KWHS has 18 sports teams, there’s also a place for everyone in athletics. The KWHS teams ranged from football and baseball to soccer and lacrosse. Though you cannot play two school sports in the same season, there are many others to choose from. For example, student-athletes on the swim team swim in the fall and run track in the spring. Some student-athletes play school sports year-round, swimming or cross-country in the fall, soccer or wrestling in the winter, and finish the year with a spring sport like track and field or lacrosse. Although the school prohibits traveling for sports with two F grades, remember to show up on time and be the best student in class and on the court.

Outside of academics and athletics, there are several clubs. Some volunteer organizations are Zonta Club, Beta Club, Team Blu, and Interact Club, all of which you can earn volunteer hours. More academic clubs at KWHS are the National Honor Society (NHS) and Mu Alpha Theta, which need a certain GPA to join. Clubs such as the Aviation Club, Robotics, Model United Nations, and Spearfishing Club are all great clubs to join in meeting new people and enjoying one of your hobbies. If you’re not into sports teams, a couple clubs compete like teams: Mock Trial and Academic Challenge. The Mock Trial team goes against other schools in a court simulation, with the students acting as attorneys and witnesses. Lastly, there is a student council club and an executive board for each class that anyone can participate in and run for officer positions. These clubs deal with events throughout the school year, like the homecoming dance, pep rallies, etc. Though, if none of the clubs “strike your fancy,” there is always the opportunity to create your own.

There are always opportunities to make new friends with about a thousand students. Additionally, with everything offered, there will always be something for someone.
