After 76 days of summer vacation, Key West High School (KWHS) has started the 2023-2024 school year. As in previous years, there are many events to look forward to such as pep rallies, competitions, football games, and much more.
Year after year, getting back into the school routine of waking up early and staying after school for clubs, sports, etc. is always difficult. One KWHS senior, Parker Curry, said she is adjusting by creating a schedule for after school. “…an after-school schedule that will help me manage my time efficiently (hopefully),” stated Curry. As this is their last year, seniors have more pressure to keep their grades up and make the most out of the year. Another senior at KWHS said that this year was different from past years stating, “It hit me on the first day that this is my last year so there’s a lot of pressure to make it my best year and leave my mark in academics and my sports.”
Once the school year settles in, many games and events happen throughout the year. Starting in August, the KWHS home football games are one of the most popular both on and off the field. Curry is most looking forward to marching for the KWHS Band during the halftime of the first football game. Which should be fun to hear since the band was invited to play in the New Year’s Eve parade in London, England. Aside from that, many other events are happening throughout the school year, including Senior Skip Day, Prom, and the Senior Night celebrations that happen in each sport.
For the new Freshmen class of 2027, it is an exciting year being their first year of high school, but there are many new activities, clubs, and sports to join. As well as many new and potentially harder classes. One KWHS Freshman, Teaghan Hoyt, stated, “I’m definitely looking forward to being in the drama club designing a line for the fashion show, and trying not to pass out in the CFK (College of the Florida Keys) swimming pool.” This is just the tip of the iceberg for freshmen and the events going on this year and the next four years. There will be other events, trips, and sporting events for each club, sport, and class.
Throughout the year, there will be good days but there will still also be bad days. Although it is important to make memories and as always, have Conch Pride.
