After 7 straight weeks of NFL (National Football League) football, the Arizona Cardinals are the sole team left undefeated. Their journey up to this point has been a bit of a shock as fans before the season, although with high hopes for the young team, didn’t expect the sudden success, so let’s take a deeper dive into their season up to this point.
In week one, the Cardinals faced the Tennessee Titans who they had no issue with cruising to an easy 38-13 victory while limiting leading rusher in the league Derrick Henry to just 58 yards on the ground. Week two was their closest call up to this point, winning a high scoring game against the Minnesota Vikings by a mere one point with a final score of 34-33. The Vikings could have been the team to put the only loss on the Cardinals record, but kicker Greg Joseph missed a 37 yard field goal which would have won them the game. In week three, the Cardinals, although with early struggle, beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-19. In week four, their most impressive victory came against the one loss Los Angeles Rams, who the week prior beat the reigning Super Bowl champions the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Cardinals took the win 37-20 and seemed to have no issue flying through the stout Rams defense. In week five, the Cardinals scored their least amount of points but due to their great defensive effort, they defeated the San Francisco 49ers 17-10. The Cardinals in week six picked up another impressive victory against the Cleveland Browns running through them 37-14. Then in week seven, the Cardinals left the Houston Texans wanting to go back home with a 31-5 win.
Some of the key performers for the Cardinals this year include Quarterback Kyler Murray who is arguably the favorite for MVP (Most Valuable Player) and has shown out of this world ability at that position. Star receiver Deandre Hopkins has also been greatly efficient this season being Murray’s number one target as usual, even with him being double teamed in many points during the games. Three other main receivers, A.J. Green, Christian Kirk, and Rondale Moore have also contributed greatly to the on fire Cardinals passing game. The two man rushing attack of Chase Edmonds and James Conner has worked very well this year especially for Edmonds who seems to be establishing himself as the lead back. Defensively, Chandler Jones, J.J. Watt, and Budda Baker have all shown to be the main three contributors to the team throughout the majority of this season.
With a long way to go this year and a tough week eight matchup against the Green Bay Packers, it’s unlikely that the Cardinals finish the regular season undefeated. However, there is no doubt the team has been phenomenal thus far and if they keep this pace, they will be Super Bowl contenders by the end of the year.
