UFC 272 Preview

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 272 is just around the corner and it’s one of the most anticipated main events in quite a while. It’s the first main event that is not for a championship belt, including neither Conor McGregor nor Nate Diaz since Anderson Silva vs. Nick Diaz in 2015. The two men fighting in the main event are #1 ranked Colby Convington and #6 ranked Jorge Masvidal.

The first fight on the main card is a heavyweight matchup between former NFL player Greg Hardy vs. Serge Spivak. This fight was originally planned for UFC 270 but was rescheduled to this weekend. Hardy was knocked out in his last fight by top heavyweight contender Tai Tuivasa, while Spivak lost via knockout to Tom Aspinall as well in his last fight.

Fight two on the main card is a welterweight matchup between the always exciting Kevin Holland and Alex Oliveira. Holland has struggled lately with two straight losses, although they have been to the top competition in the division. Oliveria has also been struggling and seems to be in the twilight of his UFC career, with Holland even joking he would send Oliveria into retirement.

Fight three of the main card is a battle of featherweights Edson Barboza vs. Bryce Mitchell. Barboza is a veteran in the UFC and although he has had a fairly up and down career, he looks to beat Mitchell. Mitchell is just getting started in the UFC and is 5-0 in his career, finally facing off against one of his first top contending opponents. It should be interesting to see how Mitchell performs and if he may be a future star in the sport.

The co-main event is a catchweight matchup due to the dropping out of Rafael Fiziev, this has led Renato Moicano to jump in on 5-day notice to fight Rafael Dos Anjos. Dos Anjos has been known to always take on the best no matter what and is a fan favorite due to this, not to mention he has had a long tenure with the UFC. Moicano has been in the UFC for quite a while himself, building a solid resume, and it should be a fantastic battle between the two.

Now the main event, and an anticipated Welterweight grudge match between Colby “Chaos” Covington and Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal. Both fighters are coming off losses to champion Kamaru Usman with Convington losing in a close decision and Masvidal being brutally knocked out by Usman. The two former teammates at gym American Top Team have had a beef for a couple of years up to this point, with things hitting a boiling point as of late. Fans have been waiting for this fight for a long period of time, and the hype for it now is at its peak. The two have quite different styles with Convington being a wrestler while Masvidal is one of the top strikers in the UFC. It is bound to be a fight that goes down in the history books and is one nobody should miss, with a great card and a highly anticipated rivalry to end the night.
