NASCAR Championship Weekend Preview

After nearly forty weeks of NASCAR Cup Series action, the championship has come down to one race at the Phoenix Raceway with four drivers competing for the crown. These drivers are Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Chase Elliott, and Martin Truex Jr., who will compete for the biggest prize in the sport.

The first championship four-driver, Martin Truex Jr., has had a very solid year with 4 wins including one at Richmond in the first round of the playoffs. Although Truex has had lots of wins it had to be noted that at some points this season, it seemed that the team had little to no speed at some tracks and were overall mediocre. However, Truex has shown race-winning speed and earlier this year at Phoenix he was the winner so there is a lot of promise for Truex to possibly snag a second career championship. Then defending champion Chase Elliott is next up and he as well has had an up and down year. With two wins on the year both being on road courses, it’s been clear the race-winning speed on the ovals has not been there. However, Elliott has been consistent and fast enough to compete and has allowed himself an opportunity at back-to-back championships.

Then we have veteran Denny Hamlin who will once again try for his elusive first championship. Hamlin has picked up two wins this season both in the playoffs at Darlington and Las Vegas. Hamlin has been mired in controversy most recently with his run-in with Alex Bowman at Martinsville where Hamlin called Bowman “An absolute hack” after Bowman spun him out in the closing laps of the race. Hamlin who seems to be nearing the end of his career has what could be the most important race of his career this sunday, and if he could take home the championship it would cement him as one of the best in the sport. Finally, the undisputed favorite for the championship is Kyle Larson. Larson has racked up an impressive nine wins this year including four in the playoffs at Bristol, Charlotte Roval, Texas, and Kansas. Larson has been the dominant car all year and it would be a spectacular way to end off his dream season by picking up his first championship in the cup series.

All four drivers have a very good chance to win the championship as they all know how to win and are pretty experienced in the series. The question that lies now is who will be able to put it all together Sunday and bring home the biggest prize in the sport.
