Record Temperatures in the South

The week of January 20th to January 25th, 2025, saw iguanas and snowfall in Florida, along with negative temperatures in the northern states. As Winter Storm Enzo passed through the United States, Florida and Louisiana received record snowfall, while many schools and governments were closed due to the conditions.

Enzo gave many students their first official snow day in Florida during the winter storm. The north Florida region reported 8.8 inches of snowfall, significantly more than the record three inches from February 1895. While Florida is known for its “year-round summer” weather, Floridians and other southern residents were taking advantage of their once-in-a-lifetime snow day. As news channels for the Southern region of the United States compared driving in the snow to taking your grandmother to church, people were sledding and having snowball fights. There were even people in New Orleans skiing and others playing ice hockey or ice skating on Canal Street.

Of course, having snow in the Southern region of the United States is not normal, especially in Florida, but as the Winter Storm Enzo cancels school and government meetings in Florida. Across the ocean, the storm Eowyn gives Ireland and the United Kingdom record winds. Which meteorologists partly blame on the storm that brought historic snow to the south.

Over time, the south will see colder winter temperatures, although not to the extreme extent of snow and ice. Winter Storm Enzo and other “once-in-a-lifetime” snowstorms will teach us what supplies to have for snow and how to pass time in the cold.
