Writer’s Burnout

By: Thomas Horvath

Many writers suffer from burnout. Burnout is when you feel exhausted from doing your job for too long without letting your mind or body get the rest that it needs. Writing often without a break can make you feel like you have no energy to come up with topics or write anymore. But there are ways to deal with burnout. This article will go into ways to deal with burnout and get creative juices flowing again.

When experiencing burnout, ask yourself: Is there anything on my mind that is interesting? Is there a topic that I haven’t covered yet but want to? What are other people writing about? These questions can help you focus on a new topic that keeps you interested. Another way is to watch the news, browse online, or just go on a walk. It’s always good to see what is going on outside of your circle, and maybe you’ll see something that fascinates you or gets your attention.

A feeling many writers get is that they must always top their last piece, which is a good goal to set for yourself, but don’t trick yourself into thinking that it must be much longer, or a grander scale. Sometimes smaller, more focused articles are what people want to read and not some big piece on current politics and world events. Find a genre or style that best compliments your talents, for some that is breaking news stories, and for others it’s news on a new video game.

The most important thing to do is not give up when you’re feeling burnt out. You’re experiencing something that every writer feels and you’ll overcome it. You can always ask others for advice, such as teachers, friends, parents, or anyone you know that can give you some pointers on how to deal with burnout.
