Have you ever wondered how Pepe’s Cafe was created? Well, Pepe’s Cafe was established in 1909, and it’s the oldest remaining restaurant in Key West. Pepe’s Cafe was originally used as a post office, which closed in the late 1980s, and once the building was purchased it was turned into a bar. In 2008 it was called “The Pepe”. The reason it was called “The Pepe” is because the locals would say “Let’s go down to The Pepe”. This saying is still used to this day.
When tourists come down to visit Pepe’s they come for the Key Lime Pie; a sweet and tart treat made with sweetened condensed milk. Key Lime Pie was made in the late 19th century. Cuban food is also very popular in Key west, since Key West is only 90 miles from Cuba. Key West is full of history, restaurants, food, and tons of activities.
