George Floyd Statue in Union Square is Vandalized

By: Tricia Desroches

George Floyd was killed on May 25, 2020, from police brutality. His death and the deaths of multiple other African Americans started protests against police brutality around America. Bronze statues of John Lewis, George Floyd, and Breonna Tayler were unveiled three days before the incident. A man was seen mixing something in a container behind the John Lewis statue, then he skated past Floyd´s statue and dumped a bucket of gray paint on the statue.

No one has been arrested yet as of SundayInvestigators have not identified the man yet, but the police have identified him as light-complexioned and of a medium build. Many people have volunteered to scrape off the paint. Chris Carnabuci, the artist of the statues, said that the incident didn’t surprise him. The Confront Art team also said that because of previous incidents that they were ¨not scared.¨ The people scraping off the paint used money out of their pockets to buy supplies from the hardware store.

The statue has been vandalized before in June when it was in Flatbush, Brooklyn. These acts show that some people don’t have sympathy and aren’t aware of what is going on in the world. People who have helped show that the country can be a team, but other people just don’t allow that to happen. The world would be a better place if people were unified and stood by each other.
