This week is a very long week for all band members. Monday, May 12th, there was a 6:30 pm meeting for band parents and students. That’s not the only thing for that day, though, because our band member in the drumline who plays the snare drum, Ian Newton, has won first place in the state competition for pole vaulting. The band has been asked to do a short celebration after school until 3 for him, so they will play a few songs and congratulate him because he is also a senior and will not be joining the band next year.
This Tuesday, May 13th, the band will have Officer Elections and Drum Major Audition from 2:45 pm-3:45 pm. They went section by section on why they were running for each position, and if your section were called for the first time, you would have to give a 45-second speech that everyone was supposed to prepare. When those 45 seconds were up, Mr.Hernandez would hit the gong to signify that the 45 seconds were up. Some band members ran for multiple sections but were only allowed to say their speech once. For instance, once you say your speech and then later on another thing you ran for came up, Mr Hernandez would just call your name and votes would be based on your one speech. The final decision was posted Wednesday at 3:35 pm and the final calls were: Jesse Watland as Band Captain, Jessica Reyes, Tito & Ariel Newton as Drum Majors. These are just some of the results, as there are still 13 different students who won section leaders for their section, and others, such as quartermasters or librarians.
This Wednesday, May 14th, there were color guard tryouts and icebreakers for all new members to get them a feel of their new peers. Whether they are incoming freshmen or sophomores who want to try something new, the meeting before the icebreaker explained everything to the newcomers and everything they will do, such as going to Rome, Italy, next year. Color guard tryouts were from 5 pm-6:30 pm, and the icebreaker was from 6:30 pm-7 pm, after which there was a food buffet with pizza and salad with a side of cookies for a snack.
The rest of the week, there was nothing else.
