Disney remakes, a heartfelt retelling or just for selling?

Disney is one of the most beloved movie makers and one of modern history’s most wealthy and recognizable companies. In 1923 founded by 2 brothers named Walt Disney and Roy Oliver Disney started the place as an animation studio where they made their stories come to life. As the movies developed and were made they eventually turned into classic old ones as new ones were being produced yearly. But Disney decided that their classics shouldn’t just be left old and forgotten so they decided to make live-action remakes of the movies so that it could appeal to modern audiences. The problem is that with the remakes they have decided to “tweak” a few things in their remakes which had made the movies feel like a classic but modified or copied.

In the various remakes, we have seen various characters added or changed for audiences not to find them controversial or to appeal to that set of audience. The first example of this is in the remake of Peter Pan from April 28, 2023, specifically the characters of The Lost Boys. In the original, The Lost Boys were the only boys who were on the island because, in their words, “girls are too smart to be tricked,” but in the remake, they included girls in The Lost Boys, which doesn’t make sense due to the classic and remake contradicting each other. Another example of this is in the remake of Pinocchio from September 7th, 2022, which had various characters added and the ending changed. The ending is most surprising because, in the classic movie, Pinocchio is turned into a real boy because of his willingness to provide to Geppetto with it happening at his house, while in the remake when he and Geppetto begin to walk to a cave or sorts, they don’t show him becoming a real boy like the classic because “in his heart he was as real as another other boy,” which clashes with the original ending. The last example that is shown is in the remake of The Little Mermaid on May 26, 2023, which in the original had Ariel, the main character, as a white-toned female, while in the remake they have changed her skin to a more brown counterpart, which might be the most if not the biggest controversial remake that contradicts the original in Disney history.

With all of these examples and evidence of Disney changing remakes to suit more to other audience members rather than a heartfelt retelling of the original stories we can safely say that Disney is making these for the monetary value by marketing it to other audience members rather than the general public so this really means that Disney wasn’t making these for anything except the money so I guess we can call it just for selling in the grand scheme of all that Disney has shown to us in the movie industry.
